Paul Nepomuceno, MT, BSP
Born and raised in “Sunny San Diego” Paul E. Nepomuceno was introduced to Holistic medicine in the Far East. He finished with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology with a particular interest in the Psychology of Dreams and Psychosomatachology which is the Mind-Body relationship, that repressed emotions can manifest into specific structural disorders.
Paul specializes in the massage modality called Tuina(Chinese healing massage) which translates as: Tui-push and Na-grasp. Tuina has a lineage of practitioners and has been documented as a form of treatment in ancient China over three-thousand years ago. The true potential and possibilities of Tuina are not yet known here in the west. Tuina is one of the main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Acupuncture and Herbs. Tuina is very effective in treating musculoskeletal-structural disorders as well as internal chronic diseases. It can also treat psychological-somatic (physiological) disorders.
Paul is trained in treating: Cervical neck pain, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, general muscle strain, adhesion, medial-lateral epicondylitis, wrist pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritic conditions, disorders of the hand and fingers, asthma, breathing difficulties, Tempero Mandibular Joint pain, thoracic and chronic lumbar muscle strain, sciatica, disorders of the hip, thigh, knee, lower leg, ankle, sprained ankle, and foot, desk fatigue(computer syndrome), common diseases of the belly, emotional-psychological stress related disorders, insomnia and chronic fatigue and anti-aging.
Qi can be translated as the vital energy that facilitates life. It moves the blood through our body, it gives the lungs power to inhale, it holds all our vital organs and tissue in place. It is the life force of the environment giving life and growth to plants and animals. It makes the world turn and moves the planets in orbit. It is above us, beneath us and will remain after we are gone.
For musculoskeletal-structural disorders the treatment principles of Tuina are:
locate obstruction(pain, muscle-spasm)
activate circulation of Qi and blood
remove obstruction
harmonize the flow of Qi and blood
restore functional anatomy
Distortions in the anatomy of an individual can be caused by injury, trauma, and even emotional repression causing bad posture leading to structural disorders and internal symptoms. Muscle tension and loss of range of motion can be caused by stress manifesting into psycho-emotional-somatic inflammations. This can be observed in the neck, shoulders, head, jaw, chest, abdomen and even in the limbs, joints and tissue. Tension in the diaphragm may lead to shortness of breath, sleep disorders and fatigue. Tension in the abdominal region may compromise the harmony of the major organs, immune system, digestion and bowel movements. Tuina uses a protocol of hand techniques to address whatever the case may be. To be effective, practitioner must harmonize their Qi with the Qi of the individual being treated. The practitioner must also cultivate their own Qi in order to have strength and wisdom to become an effective instrument of healing.
