Jeffrey Tien, L.Ac., Dipl. OM
Jeffrey earned his Bachelors of Science at the University of California, San Diego in Molecular Biology and his Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He is a Licensed Acupuncturist by the California State Board of Acupuncture, as well as a Diplomat in Oriental Medicine by the National Certification Commission.
Jeffrey's passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine started at a young age, learning traditional methods of cooking food and preparing herbs for cooking Chinese dishes in the kitchen of his mother and grandmother. He grew up around the tradition, his family going to Chinese doctors for acupuncture and herbs just as often as they went to the allopathic physicians for western medicine.
Jeffrey's early exposure to both Eastern traditional methods as well as Western science heavily influenced his life path. Knowing his career lay in Chinese medicine, he started with learning biomedicine. After completing his Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology at the University of California, San Diego, the most highly regarded and difficult program of its kind in the nation, he worked for the Center for Marine Bioresearch and Biomedicine at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, researching new antibiotics from marine actinomycetes. He also worked for the UCSD School of Medicine, researching novel receptor activity on human cells, before moving on to study Traditional Chinese Medicine at Pacific College.
He completed an internship in treating geriatric patients at the San Diego Downtown Senior's clinic. He has mentored privately under Dr. Michael Corradino, DAOM for several years at the Grossmont Medical Center Acupuncture Clinic, the Bay Recovery Centers, and North County Integrative Acupuncture Center specializing in orthopedic disorders, pain and addiction treatment, and complementary integrative medicine. He served an extended internship at the Bay Recovery Centers, studying the treatment of pain and addiction, chemical dependency, and chronic pain.
Besides the standard Pacific College curriculum, Jeffrey has continued his efforts bridging the traditions of East and West. He studies and practices several different styles of Traditional, esoteric acupuncture, including Master Tung's Acupuncture, a traditional family system originating from Taiwan, and Yi Jing Acupuncture, another traditional system based on the Book of Changes. He can trace the lineage of these systems directly back to their founders. He also studies the neurophysiology of acupuncture as taught by Dr. Michael Corradino, DAOM. From Dr. Corradino, Jeffrey has also extensively studied Tui Na(Chinese therapetic structural massage and bone setting), and the application of the pharmokinetics of nutraceuticals and herbs, and uses both extensively in his practice. Jeffrey often utilizes his understanding of genetics, biochemistry, physiology, and science in his practice.
Jeffery's clinical interests include chronic pain and addiction, orthopedics, gastrointestinal disorders, dermatology, and autoimmune disorders.
In addition to his academic and clinical qualifications, Jeffrey has been studying martial arts and meditation since the age of six and currently teaches Shaolin Kung Fu classes at the University of California, San Diego. He also has a strong background in modern nutrition and traditional Chinese dietary therapy from learning to cook from his mother, a nutritionist, and his grandmother. Jeffery also gardens and grows his own Chinese herbs as a hobby and he serves as the Medical Herbs Specialist to a local nursery specializing in edible and medicinal plants. He is a content contributor to the Chinese medicine cookbook "Ancient Wisdom, Modern Kitchen" by Yuan Wang, Warren Sheir, and Mika Ono. He speak American English, Mandarin Chinese, and French.
